Investigating the Discourse of Jihad in Islamic Online Media in Indonesia
My PhD research project investigates the interplay between the discourse of jihad on the internet and contemporary Muslims’ identity construction in Indonesia. The research is focused on the contribution of the convivial characteristic of the internet to the development of various Muslims identities based on their distinct interpretation of the concept of jihad. Several Muslim group websites and social networking forums are selected for a case study in analysing the role of the internet in the construction of contemporary Muslim identities and the transformation of Muslim religious authority in Indonesia.
This research aims to investigate the contemporary use of the internet in the articulation of polarized Muslim identities, especially in representing the concept of Jihad to the Indonesian population. By investigating the use of the internet by Muslim groups in Indonesia especially in the war of ideas in articulating the interpretation of Jihad, I hope this research can offer a significant contribution to the study of contemporary Muslims identity construction in Indonesia in the last decade. Furthermore, the study of the construction of Indonesian Muslims’ identity through the discourse of Jihad is an important step to understanding their position in the war against global terrorism.
